AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Karimnagar town on Tuesday has boosted the morale of the Congress rank and file in general and the contesting candidates in particular. Though, the Congress is ahead of others in electioneering, the success of their party president’s meeting and her statement on Telangana statehood has pepped up the campaign in the district. Initially, the Congress leaders were worried about the turnout for the meeting . However, the one-hour delay in the arrival of Sonia Gandhi helped the party leaders to mobilise people. The single entry point and security check delayed the entry of people. However, as soon as the helicopter carrying Sonia Gandhi arrived, the surging crowds broke the security and rushed into the stadium. APCC president D. Srinivas reminded that the AICC president launched the 2004 electioneering in the Telangana region from the same venue in Karimnagar town. Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy listed the developmental and welfare schemes launched during the last five years. He also called upon the people to compare the performance of five-years of people-friendly governance and 9-years of anti-people policies pursued by the then TDP government and cast their vote judiciously. Sonia Gandhi was cheered when she touched upon the ancient history and glory of Karimnagar district and supreme sacrifices of freedom fighters. |
